Winter Boat Storage Options
from: Mark HarrisThere are a variety of effective ways that you can take accomplish winter boat storage. If you own a boat, and you live in a colder climate that prevents you from enjoying your boat during the winter months, you need to think about storing your boat safely during the cold off season. You should be able to find various storage options locally in your area. A proper winter boat storage solution provides you with the necessary means to protect your boat from harsh cold winter elements.
What Types of Storage?
There are many different types of winter boat storage. You can secure indoor or outdoor storage. The storage can be on your property or it can be located at a boat storage facility. Some marinas offer storage options for the winter months as do many on-shore solutions for storage. Boat storage methods range from storing it completely indoors, partially enclosed, just covered or even just leaving it outdoors. To make the appropriate choice, you need to know a bit about your own boat and which storage solutions will work best for the type of boat you own.
Start with knowing how to take care of your boat. Winter boat storage should be dependant on the type of storage that you need in the area. In higher elevation climates, which are more prone to icing over, you may need to bring the boat indoors. In areas like Florida, or warmer areas, you may have a perfectly adequate storage solution right at the marina. Your boat manual should provide you with some idea of what requirements your boat has for indoor or outdoor storage during the winter. Your boat's storage requirements will ultimately depend on the material of the boat as well as the style, features and the value of your boat.
For power boats, you need to protect the inboard or outboad motor and cooling system. You will want to flush the coolant system to protect against a cracked block during the cold winter temperatures. Attend to all the fluids including the engine oil, transmission fluid, etc. Your local marine shop can usually provide a service to winterize your boat for you. This is similar to winterizing an automobile for storage over the winter.
When considering all of your winter boat storage options, take the time to look at several locations to determine which offers you the most complete protection for your needs. To best understand the storage capabilities and services offered, make sure to take a tour of the facilities you are considering. By comparing several winter boat storage facilities, you will get a better feel for your options in your area.
Your boat is a valuable investment. Be sure to provide the best winter storage protection for you boat.
